A SERIES OF PARANORMAL ADVENTURE NOVELS SET IN LONDON OF THE 1970'S. SEX, MAGIC AND MAYHEM IN THE PLATINUM AGE OF GLAM ROCK!

The THAUMIC TRIAD are a series of novels written by IAN RITCHIE . The series is set in London of the 1970's and concerns a secret society of witches and warlocks known as the "The Mystic Community" AKA "The Arcadian Order". One of their most sacred prophecies ordains The Witch, The Warrior and The Demon shall come together to combine their forces as the Thaumic Triad and assert dominion over the forces of magick.

Each novel is a self contained story and the books can be read in any order. They are available  to purchase from AMAZON.COM.PLEASE BE WARNED  - the novels contain graphic violence, bad language and very explicit  sex and are for adults only.

Vampiric beings and demonic entities may also find them offensive. Not to mention any genuine Wiccans  and Druids.

Scroll down the webpage to find the "SHADOWS OF LONDON" feature that hosts over 90 images of lost and haunted buildings in London.

So far there are three novels in the series. The first,   DEMONIC LIBERTIES, followed by the second adventure entitled INHUMAN RESOURCES.  A third book   SATANIC GOLDMINE   was published in October 2019.

At the moment the novels are only available as ebooks as I'm too tight - er, I mean, under resourced, to publish a paperback format.

To those who reach the bottom of the site, you'll find a "Comments and Suggestions" box where you can leave your thoughts and impressions, good, bad or indifferent (only go easy on the abuse - despite all the evidence I'm a sensitive soul.) Or perhaps you have additional information on some of the buildings featured on the "SHADOWS OF LONDON" page?

Anyway, enjoy the site, and maybe it could persuade you to buy an ebook or two? I know I'm insanely biased, but they really are a fantastical filthy fun read. (Try saying that three times fast.)

DEMONIC LIBERTIES -   "A fast-paced, heart-gripping novel ... the action was intense, the plot was awesome and the delivery was hot."

REVIEWS

They liked it - so will you!!!

Thomas Anderson, Literary Titan -

In Demonic Liberties, author Ian Ritchie ingeniously melds elements of witchcraft, demons, eroticism, and satire to construct a narrative rich in fantastical themes.

Ritchie excels in pacing, masterfully propelling the reader through a series of brisk plot developments. This approach, while rapid, maintains engagement and cultivates a sense of anticipation. The characters are meticulously crafted, embodying a blend of virtues and flaws that resonate with readers seeking relatable, multifaceted personas. Notably, the dynamic between Miriam Blaine and John Tolan, arising from their disparate backgrounds, is portrayed with a lighthearted flair.

Demonic Liberties weaves a tale that is as unconventional as it is captivating, offering a blend of genres that will appeal to those intruged by a fusion of the mystical and the satricial. Ritchie's skillful storytelling and robust character development stand out, making this a compelling read for those who enjoy a spirited adventure through the realms of the arcane.

  4 Stars.

Sam Ibeh  OnlineBookClub.org -

Do you believe in the possibility of someone being a human and a demon at the same time? Ian Ritchie takes the story to a whole new paradigm in Demonic Liberties. This is a fast paced, heart-gripping novel that grips you so hard that you wouldn't want it to let go till you're done. The action was intense, the plot was awesome and the delivery was hot. One of the things I liked about this book is the way the characters came alive. It will be easy to convince me they were non-fictional characters. Additionally, Ritchie painted realistic situations for the characters to exhibit practical attributes. Another thing that fascinated me was the depth and flow of the conversations, I enjoyed every single period of discussion that transpired in the book, they were interesting and had a seamless flow. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to lovers of mystical stories. However, if you're averse to erotic content, you should take a pass on this one.

WHO ARE THE THAUMIC TRIAD?

LADY MAGISTER MIRIAM BLAINE - A high powered witch of the sacred order "THE SENTINELS OF MEDEA", wielder of the Obsidian dagger "Talcemini"  - a trans-nexial blade that bestows great power on those chosen to hold them. Many believe the Lady Blaine should be proclaimed Grand Magar and rule the ARCADIAN ORDER, while just as many believe she should be disbarred from practicing magick altogether. For her part, Lady Blaine has no desire to rule over anyone and wishes everyone would just stop making a fuss.

JOHN TOLAN - A Detective Inspector in Scotland Yard's serious crime squad, Tolan found himself drawn into the strange, mysterious "shadow world" of the ARCADIAN ORDER against his wishes and finds all this mystical malarkey rather hard to take. If it was up to him he'd rather wash his hands of the whole business and get back to nicking dodgy villains. Inevitably,  he is constantly drawn into battling the forces of darkness against his better judgement.

CHARLIE "CHAS" MAFFERDT - Small-time thief, cheat, liar, gambler and police informant, Mafferdt could never be called the most upstanding of citizens and that was even before he became possessed by the demonic entity ASTORETH. Summoned to the earth from another plane of existence, the demon-wraith had no corporeal form in our universe and could only survive by merging with a physical host - i.e. the hapless Mr. Mafferdt. Together, they comprise a symbiotic being, though from time to time the life essence of Astoreth will assert itself, converting Mafferdt's molecular structure to manifest its physical presence in the world of man. Whenever that happens, things tend to take a rather nasty turn.

THE DREAMHOUSE

Originally the Odeon Harlesden, it closed in 1969, where the lease was bought by Miriam Blaine who set about converting the building to her private sanctum complete with underground garage,  while the upper circle housed her living quarters, kitchens and lounge. The main auditorium became her "Temple of contemplation".

However, in the real world ....

.... the Odeon was closed in 1972 after which it operated as an independent venue showing Indian films before finally being demolished in 1989.

A block  of flats was built on the site, this is how it looks today.

THE  MYSTICAL TRIUMVRIC

This is the sacred emblem of  THE THUAMIC TRIAD. The design represents three souls united with the earth and the heavens in perfect harmony.

Legend has it the arcane rune originated from lost Atlantis itself, while others insist it derives from Pagan imagery and was inspired by the Druid priests of ancient Briton.

Still others claim it's a rejected doodle from the cover of Led Zeppelin IV.

 THE MASERATI  BORA

A gift to the Lady Miriam Blaine from the oil magnate Osrin Khalique in gratitude for exorcising a vengeful spirit from his daughter Shaezrin.

Over 500 models were produced between 1971-1978, with a top speed of 171 Mph powered by a V8 engine of 4,719 cc that produces 310 hp at 6,000 rpm and 325 lb-ft of torque at 4,200 rpm.

I have no idea what any of that means either, but it surely is a handsome beast and no mistake.

THE OFFICE OF ANOMALOUS AFFAIRS

Such an organization does not exist and has never existed.  Be advised that any further queries on this matter will result in prosecution under the official secrets act.

Established in 1847 by Henry Beresford, businessman, explorer and philosopher the museum that bears his name lies in the county of Bromley near the Ravensbourne river next to what is now Shortlands gold course.

Beresford was fascinated by the paranormal as well as harbouring an equally strong interest in modern science and technology. A long standing member of the Theosophical Society he published a number of books calling for a new discipline that would bridge the divide between classical and romantic thinking, uniting the arts and sciences.

Since his death in 1863 his family have maintained the private museum and in 1932 an extension was built onto the rear of the building to house a new research facility. Unfortunately, the modern art-deco structure was ill-suited to the ornate style of the original building and many felt relieved that the new addition was tucked around the back of the museum out of sight.

In the 1970's the museum was run by Anthony Beresford who retained close ties with the government and it was rumored the resources of the research department were utilized by the Office of Anomalous Affairs as part of their science division.

   *  It should be noted that all of the above is of course, complete fiction.
Seriously, if anyone's thinking of running around Bromley looking for a private museum, you're in for a severe disappointment as it doesn't exist. However, Horniman's museum is just a few miles down the road in Forest Hill, which is well worth a visit.

THE ARCADIAN ORDER

More commonly referred to as "The Mystic Community" the origins of the secret order of Mages and Wiccans dates back to the earliest civilizations known to man. Throughout history numerous mystical societies have played an important role in human culture - such as the LEGIONE CELESTE, THE ASTRAL ALLIANCE, THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR, THE ENCHANTERS' CIRCLE and THE ILLUMINATI. But with the retreat of magical forces from the earthly sphere, the fall of Pagan worship and the rise of established religious orthodoxy the influence of these factions diminished considerably and they retreated to the shadows. With the industrial revolution and the domination of modern science, magical thinking became even further marginalized.

It was only in 1887 that the venerated Mage LAWRENCE  TYNHAM drew up the Mystical Charter and forged a loose coalition of Wiccans, Sorcerors and Wizards - known collectively as "Magisters"  to create a mystical alliance dedicated to humanistic values in the modern age. Drawing on the ancient texts of the Thaumic Masters  - said to originate from the lost realm of Atlantis - Tynham  used the ancient prophecies of the THAUMIC TRIAD as the basis for a new cult, anticipating a time when The Witch, The Warrior and The Demon would come together and usher in a new golden dawn of magick.

Proclaiming himself as "Grand Magar" the society of the ARCADIAN ORDER became firmly established with those who practiced the ways of the occult, particularly in his British homeland. Sadly though, his Utopian vision failed to materialize and the new Arcadia he envisaged never came to be. Since his death the Mystic Community continued to thrive in the shadows of the modern world as an underground faction. Many of those who practice the thaumaturgic arts tend to be ambitious, devious and treacherous, ensuring the Community remained factious and divided.

In 1943 Eric Malthus, last of the Grand Magars to rule the Community was killed in a German air raid, the Arcadian Order were unable to elect a successor. A period of unrest and turmoil followed, though many believed that with the transcideral event in 1973 and the return of the Thaumic Triad the mystic community would rise up out of the shadows to assert its true dominance over the world. However, such hopes were proved false with the OmniChron purges in the turbulent summer of 1981 when the last remnants of the Arcadian Order were swept away forever.

Since then, rumors persist that a revival is imminent, though even more claim the Order simply never went away and was merely driven further underground.

THE  SENTINELS OF MEDEA

An ancient and mysterious coven dedicated to protecting humanity throughout the ages the secret order of Wiccans established their base of operations on the site of a Druidic temple on the island of Anglesey off the coast of North Wales. The members of the cult invoked the witch Medea as their sacred figurehead, reclaiming her status from the ancient Greeks who had unfairly maligned her.

With the mass persecution of witches throughout the 17th century the sect was forced to operate under the guise of a convent until 1870 when it became a private school known as "The Ascademy of Natural Studies". Though its members vary in degrees of ability the most powerful Wiccans wield the "trans-aetheric nexus" AKA the sacred obsidian daggers. These rare and ancient artefacts channel immense mystical power upon those who bear them and each is granted a name. So far, only five obsidian daggers are known to exist - OBSEIDRON, TALCEMINI, DEMATHRAE, CERACANTI and MIRASMIN.

Throughout the course of the 20th Century the coven's numbers steadily diminished, though many believe the forces they wield are too great for mortal beings to bear, leaving them open to corruption and madness. Such fears seem to have been proven by the actions of the rogue witch ZAEVIA EISSENGARDT - a former mentor or Mother Lumina who initiated the transcideral event of 1973, threatening global destruction and saturating the earth with intense, exotic forces.

ANOMALOUS AFFAIRS

It's possible the "Thuamic Triad" series of books I've written are a bit too dense and convoluted to interest casual readers. Rather than having to wade through 400-odd pages (sometimes very odd) I've devised a series of short stories and novellas to serve as an entertaining, simple introduction to the world of the Arcadian Order. Hopefully this will prove more accessible and lead to more readers seeking out the novels. It will also demonstrate how ordinary, everyday lives are affected by all the paranormal nonsense and help explain how all this crazy stuff could have taken place while the general public remain ignorant. It's called "Anomalous Affairs" after the government department in the Home Office that strives to keep paranormal forces in check.
The individual tales are all self-contained, easily followed and entertaining in their own right, with no prior knowledge as to the series required, whilst also building a mythology that feeds into the regular series. What follows is a menu of what's on offer, and how I went about putting the stories together.

 FADING EMBERS
This was originally a fantasy tale, but it seemed to work as part of the Thaumic Triad series. I set it in the early part of the 19th Century, where the modern world was just emerging and the old ways were being discarded. It serves as a kind of introduction to the mystic community, with Doug Farrel and the witch Aegryd as an olde worlde forerunner to Miriam Blaine and John Tolan. Lot of explicit sex and violence - not for the faint hearted. But then, I guess that could be said for most of my stories.

HOSTILE TERRITORY
I intended this to be a short story of around 5,000 words or so. As with so much of my writing, the tale rather grew in the telling to a 17,000 word mini-epic. Set in 1961, it serves to introduce the concept of the Schrecken Zauber Korps (Hitler's secret task force organized to unleash occult powers against the allies in World War II. What do you mean, they never taught you about this in school?) It also presents an outsider's look of London, as seen through the eyes of German cop Edgar Reimann. I guess the subtext could be "London was crap in the 1950s", which would also have made a suitable title. Starts out as a grim, gritty thriller, grows progressively weirder, until it goes totally apeshit at the end. I rather liked how it turned out - wonder what anyone else makes of it?

A PAN-ASTRAL, PSYCHEDELIC WITCH-HUNT IN LONDON TOWN
Had a lot of fun with this. Two major characters - voodoun priestess Gemira Cordell, and the witch Miriam Blaine - meet for the first time. As befits the time it's set in - 1966 - it's a weird, wild ride.

A DEMON IN THE WHITE SWAN
Two minor characters - Amanda Faye (in the guise of Anastasia) and Carlton Simeon, are given centre stage in a sleazy, sinister, warped tale set in 1971. I tried selling this one to a genre magazine, only to receive a sharp dismissal. The editor felt the character of Simeon was unlikable. Er ... well, yeah. That's rather the whole point of the tale.

ELLIE THROUGH THE TELESCOPE
Two more supporting characters, Ellie Tadlowe and Mikos DeVane are in the spotlight. It was an attempt to depict a fantastical, hallucinogenic, dream-like experience with a lot of erotic imagery. Rather like a perverse "Alice through the looking glass", hence the title. A surreal odyssey of dark eroticism, or a silly bit of dodgy pornography? Try it, and judge for yourself.

THE CAVES OF ZARRAMUNDI
This one features Chas Mafferdt, cockney wide boy and gangland thug, possessed by a demon. Apart from being a fun story in its own right, it helps fill in a few gaps between the first novel and the second, showing Chas heading to Wales, on the run from the authorities and assorted gangsters. Also details how he first meets up with Gary Samedi.

RETURN OF THE WITCH-HUNTER
Had a devil of a time writing this one. Starts in the 17th Century, told from the perspective of "Sister Mildryth", a nun who's inducted into a group of witch hunters. Half way through, she's killed off - then resurrected in 1973. This presented me with the task of describing the modern world (or at least the world of 1973) through the eyes of a 17th Century nun. Modesty aside, I was rather pleased with how it turned out. The story is both grim and violent, yet also light-hearted and funny. Second part features Granny Gaumont - who's always a fun character to write.

FAMILY TRADITION
A rate example of one of my "short stories" actually coming in under 5,000 words. This was designed as a basic supernatural adventure featuring modern day super-witch Miriam Blaine, but was a tricky thing to write. It's told from the perspective of Tony Pelham, but there's a twist towards the end that reveals his true character, and I didn't want to give away too much too soon.

MUGWROM WANTS HIS DINNER
Of all the stories I devised, this one succeeds the most in giving an outsider's perspective on the shadow world of the Arcadian Order - in this case, housewife Jean Mason. If you're wondering, "Mugwrom" is the name of her cat. How did it get such a daft name? You'll have to read the story to find out.

MEET THE MAN- MONSTER FROM HACKNEY MARSHES.
Chas Mafferdt strikes again. If I'm honest, of all the characters I've devised, he's probably my favourite, which rather says more about me than I'd care to admit. It's always fun bringing him together with John Tolan. The two characters really spark off each other, but they're always heading in opposite directions, which makes it hard to contrive new ways of getting them to meet up. This is a fun, light-hearted adventure that winds things off nicely and hopefully sends the reader off with a smile on their face.

And that's your lot - ten fast-paced, funny, erotic, fantastical adventures featuring an intriguing collection of vivid, off-beat characters. What more could anyone want? If no one buys them, I guess it's back to stacking shelves at Tesco.

THE TRIAD IS NOW A TRILOGY

Today sees the publication of the fourth novel in the series SATANIC GOLDMINE  which is available to download from AMAZON.COM. I've also started work on the next novel which should hopefully be published in the new year.

20th July 2019

IN THE SUMMERTIME ...

I've spent a lot of time these past few weeks trying to raise interest in the novels, sticking this website together and blundering about on social media with mixed results. To all those readers who've taken advantage of the special offers and grabbed yourselves a free novel, hope you enjoy the books (but of course you will!) and here's where I go wittering on again about how important it is for you to take the time and trouble of leaving a short review. Thanks for your support. As a consequence of all this mucking about, I've rather neglected my writing and it's currently looking increasingly likely that I'll miss the intended publication date for "SATANIC GOLDMINE". Seeing as booksales are fairly dead this time of year, this will be my last post for a while. As you enjoy yourselves in foreign climes and lark about in the sun I'll be slaving away over a keyboard hammering out the third adventure of the Thaumic Triad. Hopefully I'll get back on schedule over the next few months.
  See you in the autumn!

  TEETHING TROUBLES  (Part 793 ...)

Well, predictably the brand "new-look" web-site got off to an iffy start with the promised "Comments and queries" box going on the fritz. Hopefully, the problems have all been sorted out and you'll be able to drop me a line on what you make of all this nonsense. Though if your comments are something like "Take that photo of my property off your bloody website!" then I'll have to refer you to my legal team. (Yeah, as if I can afford one of those!) Anyway, fingers crossed, all the bugs have been ironed out and nothing more will gooo worgnzdghrf*&[~@_$ ... error ...

NEW MONTH, NEW WEBSITE

Welcome to the new look website. I've spruced the place up a bit and added a few new features, including the "SHADOWS OF LONDON" page. Actually, I may have gotten a little carried away with the "SHADOWS OF LONDON". My original intention was to try and convey the atmosphere and environment of the THE THAUMIC TRIAD novels by posting a few old photos. I've ended up with over 90 images and will probably be adding more in the weeks ahead. I've also tried not to sound too bitter or angry about the damage that's been inflicted on poor old London these past few decades, but I daresay the odd sarky comment or ten have sneaked through. Anyway, come on in, take a look around. Oh, and while you're here, perhaps I can interest you in a fun, filthy horror book or two?

22nd MAY 2019

   WHAT'S MY TITLE?

Well, buggeration! There I was giving myself a smug pat on the back for coming up with such a nifty title for my magnum opus as"INHUMAN RESOURCES", then I go onto GOODREADS and find that so has just about everyone else! There must be at lest ten other books under the same name, dammit!!! So, if anyone out there ever does get around to checking out one of my efforts ( Call me biased, but I guarantee you wont be disappointed) make sure it's written by Ian Ritchie and not any of those other ********! Still, at least my next novel wont have the same problem. "Game of Thrones", hah - bet no one else has thought of that one!

11th MAY 2019

WHY THE SEVENTIES?

A number of people (well, a handful of friends and family) have asked why on earth I set my novels in the seventies - a decade written off by most as a period best forgotten.  I can't deny that no one in their right mind would ever look back on that time as paradise on earth - plagued by all the economic chaos, strikes and terrorist attacks that are associated with the headlines of the day along with sexism, racism and any other kind of "ism" you care to mention. Yet despite this bleak environment - or maybe because of it - the decade was blessed with the greatest pop culture ever, arguably surpassing the sixties with the finest films and TV while pop music itself underwent all manner of rampant convulsions from the gaudy froth of glam, the lunacy of "progressive rock", the heady rush of disco to the nihilistic scream of punk. Nearly all of this was happening beneath the radar, mainstream culture merely grazing the tip of the iceberg with the majority of the public unaware,  and mostly unconcerned, as to the extent of what was really going on out there. Along with this, a busy underground movement was brewing with all manner of radical factions and secret organizations seeking out alternative lifestyles. If ever one wanted to write about a mystical society wielding powerful forces while remaining hidden from view, the turbulent chaos of the seventies makes for the perfect setting.

WHAT THE PUBLIC SAY

MARTIN  WEAVER   dropped a line to point out there's a mistake in all my ranting on the "Shadows of London" page. (only one?)  Apparently the archway at Euston Station was demolished in 1962, the new station was opened in 1966. Serves me right for being so snarky.

STEVE LANGSDOWNE   wrote to say he was one of the hundreds who snapped up a free copy of "DEMONIC LIBERTIES"  in the summer giveaway and loved the book.  Thanks for the kind words, Steve, but don't tell me - tell Amazon! I need reviews!!

Many thanks to all those who got in touch. Keep your comments coming by using the box below.

COMMENTS & QUERIES

I Hope you enjoyed your visit.  Any comments or queries you might have, leave a message in the box below.  If you enjoyed the site - tell your friends! If you hated the site - tell your enemies!   The more people that know about the Thaumic Triad, the more time I'll be able to devote producing more of this nonsense, the more fun we'll all have! Plus, I'll get to keep eating and have a roof over my head. Which will be nice.

Thanks for dropping by and keep your heads down - you never know what's out there!
